Some while ago, Daphne hit a million followers on IG. I was surprised to see people in their forties taking the time out to congratulate her. I mean, they actually used the word CONGRATULATIONS in posts that would fit perfectly in the fake support your own movement and most likely in the lets pretend we are happy for you column of 237 Fake Love Magazine. If you are wondering what I am trying to say, let me put it in Lamnso. Hitting 1 million followers on IG is NOT an achievement. It is something though but not an achievement. If you want to stop reading here and call me a hater, you won’t be the first.
Any-ha!
Let’s talk about the real stuff this article is all about.
Social media has become a major tool for marketing and promoting all sorts of products and with that, the race for followers has been on. We celebrate every thousandth follower with posts thanking them for making us who we are. Influencer marketing is buzzing and many are scrambling to start a page on just whatever they can think of with the goal of building a large enough following that they can leverage to take money from other businesses or individuals to advertise their products or sell their own products. Some believe that if they can just hit that one million mark, they have nothing else to worry about.
Most of you reading this will not know Arii, the famous IG influencer who furnishes her privileged lifestyle through brand endorsements and partnerships. Arii has a little over two million IG followers. Many of her posts are just simple images of herself wearing a brand’s outfit, with the brand tagged in the caption. Last month, one of those partnerships ended before it could start. Arii had to sell at least 36 pieces of the product for the deal to be sealed but she was unable to and the deal fell through. Her mistake was she thought having a large number of followers is an advert; a mistake which many people using social media to market their products make so often.
Your one million or forty thousand or five thousand followers most likely are not of the same demographic and are most likely not interested in everything you have to sell as an influencer. That means with any product (especially products that are new to your audience) you are trying to sell, you have to actually advertise to your audience. You have to have an advertising plan which goes beyond posting the same picture over and over and asking people to inbox you for details. An advertising plan is a promotion blueprint that provides the direction for businesses to create awareness in the market, engage with an entirely new customer base, and most importantly bolster sales.
Our economy is very far from the stage where one can earn a living through brand endorsements; reason why we see most influencers ending up with their own brands. Many of those brands have not lasted three months because of the mistake the owners make - thinking that the entirety of their IG followers constitute their primary customer base. They post and forget to advertise.
My next article will talk about advertising plans and some of my ideas on how you can become a earning influencer in our context.
