I was going to go with the title ‘the prophetess that is not welcome in her hometown’. But that would have insinuated that we have all basically rejected her. Which is not true. Zinnia’s YouTube channel boasts of only four songs. And with the competition that is going on in the music scene in Cameroon today, it takes more than four songs or a really good measure of luck to be able to break the mould.
I’ve known about Zinnia for the longest time. I remember back in 2009 when she won the singing competition organised by a famous beer brand. I also remember that she won that competition one year after she won another singing competition, this time organised by a breakfast beverage brand.
And then that was it. I never heard of an album (she was promised the production of one, along with its promotion, in her prize package). No doubt she never got what she was promised.
I never heard of her until sometime almost 3 years ago (Feb 2017) when she released “Madam Makossa” featuring Askia. A song that I particularly liked. 3 months before that there was the song, Bongo, featuring Stanley Enow that I did not particularly like.
And then there was that long silence. It was silent until yesterday when by some miracle, YouTube recommended the song “Overload” by Zinnia. Curious, I clicked on it after seeing that it had a whopping 2.5 million views. A video released 5 months ago by a Cameroonian has 2.5 million views and I have never heard of it??? It didn’t make sense to me!
That’s when I began scrolling through the comments. I scrolled through almost all the 800 comments and I could identify only 3 from Cameroonians. So who were the other people?
People from Mauritius, Fiji for the most part. Then there were people from Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Guadeloupe, Timor Leste, Tahiti, Solomon Island! As it turns out, “Overload” has been on HEAVY ROTATION in these island nations for since sometime in July 2018 when it was first released. These Pacific Islanders have been jamming to the song for over a year. I read comment from people from Fiji saying it is the unofficial anthem of the country! I read comments from people in Mauritius saying that was the song that they danced to into the new year, 2019. I read comments from people saying that they ask the DJ at the clubs to play that song over and over.
And it is actually a good song!
As the video of the song features clips from fans singing and dancing to the song; a testament how much people loved it and how much it was a hit before the music video was released just five months ago.
How that song got so popular in those countries is a mystery on its own. I was already telling myself that is a good market for her to sell herself and her management should probably get some gigs for her. Right after that thought, I went to her Instagram page to see what promotional activities she had been doing as to that.
Turns out she has already played at some clubs in Mauritius. And it wasn’t just that, she was given the red carpet treatment. I’m talking bodyguards, a welcome committee at the airport, dancers and flowers to welcome her… the whole package.
It’s beyond my comprehension how a song which is basically UNKNOWN in Cameroon is making such big waves far away from our shores.
At this point, Zinnia reminds me of Niniola, the sister of Teni. Niniola also rose to fame after participating in a singing contest. And just like Zinnia she found a fan base very far from Nigeria… in South Africa. Her music is a blend of South African House music and Afrobeats. As a matter of fact, ‘Madam Makossa’ and ‘Bongo’ by Zinnia also have that South African Kwaito feel to it.
If anything I’m happy that Zinnia was able to receive some accolades, even if it is far from her home. She has been around for 10 years and it is just now that the first signs of success are perhaps beginning to show.
So, we are adding our voice to those island people by putting the link to the video of overload below so you all could listen and share, and perhaps it will be played at our clubs here at home too.
