The next person on our list of artists to watch this 2022 is Witty Minstrel. Witty Minstrel’s 2021 was basically a spillover from 2020. The entire country continued to dance to his hit single “Be Proud” which brought him a total of 10 awards in 2021. He received a Canal D’or, 2 Cameroon Music Evolution Awards, a CIMFEST Excellence Award,2 MUMA awards and 4 Balafon Music Awards.
In 2021 he released three songs to follow up on the success of “Be Proud” but those have not really made nearly as much waves.
With the multiple awards which mostly came in towards the end of the year, it is obvious that there is pressure on him to live up to the promise of ‘Be Proud.” We are therefore on the lookout to see if he can create the same magic he did with “Be Proud” or fall into the category of One Hit Wonders.
On the 28th of February, he released his first studio album titled “The Untold African Story.” The 8 track album maintains his traditional sound and talks about Africa before colonization and Africa’s relationship with the occident.
Despite having only one hit song to his name, Witty is officially the guardian of the Cameroonian culture as far as music is concerned. While many artists are flocking into pop music, he has decided to stay traditional and it is paying off for him as can be seen in the kinds of deals and bookings he is getting. He was the guest artist for the opening ceremony of the MTN Elite One Championship which took place in Mbouda.
