The biggest lie Silicon Valley ever sold to the world was that they backed poor founders who became rich. The grass to grace story is a myth.
They initially backed people who were already on the trajectory to comfort with corporate jobs. They backed many Stanford students.Zuck was in Harvard. Bill Gates too. The fact that they dropped out didn't mean that they were poor. They could afford to drop out.
The myth has damaged many in Africa who keep thinking that they have the same chances.I have a young friend who finally got a job after his third startup failed. He regrets wasting all that time because of the hype in Africa some years ago.
The startup successes in Africa are great advertisements for investors who need other investors to back them. Like a Ponzi.
The truth is that we are far from startups changing Africa. What Africa needs is more SME support and building up the middle class.
We don't need valuation games. Those are games for people with advanced markets. People will get rich from it but they won't be truthful.
I have made money from it and probably will continue to do so but I believe that if we rethink everything, we will make even more.
I am not on a mission to save Africa. I just want us to realize that nobody is also coming to save us. Let's be real and do real stuff.
