When we hear about smart homes many of us think automatically of expensive objects and of Western countries. We think about fully automated houses where everything probably responds to voice commands. For the most imaginative of us, we may even imagine something that looks like the home of Iron Man. In sum, many do not see the concept of smart homes as something which can be associated to Cameroon and to our immediate environment.
Curiously enough, some of the objects which we have been using in our homes long before the internet age were “smart.” Take for example the clothing iron. The iron has a thermostat built into it that automatically switches off the current supply to the iron once it get hot beyond a certain threshold.
In that same spirit, there exists many small gadgets im the market today, which are pretty affordable, which can be used to make the home smarter. Yes these gadgets exist in Cameroon. Yes you can consider getting one that can be used at your home. But how do you know some of these gadgets? How do you find out what you need? And at what price?
This is where Clay Makain Kimbi comes in.
Clay Makain kimbi is a young Cameroonian from kom in the northwest region currently based in bamenda. He studied electrical technology in high school and proceeded to the National Polytechnic University Institute (NPUI), Bamenda, where he studied telecommunications at HND level and ICT at the Bachelor’s degree level. He worked as a sound technician at a radio station and is currently working as an audio editor. He also doubles as a smart home enthusiast.
It is based off of his love for smart gadgets and his interest in smart homes that he started a YouTube channel that explores this area - The MC SMART HOMES channel
The MC SMART HOMES Youtube channel does unboxing and reviews of smart home gadgets and has conversations around technology as a whole. Clay hopes that via the channel, people can get to learn something new about technology and improve their interaction with technology.
The channel explores the functionality of technology and also make them available for who ever needs them installed. The hope is that everyone who has any sort of interaction with technology ( users and manufacturers) subscribe to the channel as it presents new tech ideas that they can benefit from.
Some of the objects that undergone Clay’s scrutiny are a smart fan, an affordable motion detection system, a smart kettle a smart trash can, a fingerprint door lock for homes and an automatic water-saving tap.
