Quartier Mozart is a movie that every Cameroonian should watch. It is even more important for those in the movie industry to watch. I have referenced the movie here in the few times I have written about the Cameroon movie industry because I feel it is the African movie par excellence.
It has an earthy tone and texture that is so characteristic of African movie directors from the 80s and 90s and should be a reference to filmmakers today who have taken the Nollywood route of over-dramatization and deus ex machina endings.
Released in 1992, it tells the story of a young woman who asks a sorceress to transform into a boy in order to experience the Quartier Mozart neighbourhood. This new man makes new friends in some men who live in the neighbourhood and do everything in their power to make him sleep with the teenage daughter of an overzealous police officer. While this is happening, the commissioner himself is going through a tumultuous marriage and an uncertain employment situation.
The film is a drama-comedy that is a social discourse on sex and power, paedophilia, corruption, gossip, idleness, sorcery and superstition and the immorality in the familiarity of people living in popular neighbourhoods.
It is a movie that EVERY Cameroonian should watch. In 1992, most of us reading this were kids. Some were not even born. But after you should watch it, you will be shocked at how in close to 30 years, things have not changed, and how they have gotten worse over time.
The movie is 80 mins long. It is French, but if your French is remotely good, you should have no problem understanding
